 英语翻译之三.比较结构的翻译 |
1．less than, more than, not so much as等表示比较结构的词
很多情况下不能简单地翻译成“比。。。多”或者“比。。。少”。
练习1. Americans have a warmth and friendliness which is less superficial than many foreigners think.
练习2. Americans are far more race-conscious than they are class-conscious.
练习3. Miss Hunter is more snobbish than haughty.
练习4. I was less angry than shocked.
练习5. It was not so much her appearance he liked as her character.
练习6. KGB(克格勃)is a multi-purpose, clandestine arm of power, more than an intelligence or counter intelligence organization.
练习7. I’m more than happy to hear it.
2．用比较级表示最高级意义
练习8. China’s economy is more booming than that of any other Asian country.
3. no more than / not more than,…
(1) no more than / not more than
No more than强调少，翻为“仅仅”，not more than翻为“不超过”
No more … than 消极否定，翻成“两者都不。。。；。。。不，。。。也不”
Not more … than “A没有B。。。”
练习9. . He has no / not more than five dollars on him.
He is no / not more diligent than you.
(2)no less than, not less than
No less than=as much as 强调多，“竟有。。。之多，多达”
Not less than客观描述，“不少于，至少”
No…less than前后都是肯定意义，含有惊奇的感情。“是，正是；和。。。一样；多达”
练习10. His son has read no / not less than 50 English books.
练习11. The middle-aged man was no less a person than the new minister.
练习12. Her voice is no less sweet than it used to be.
